Bike tour – Mysterious Bask Country (Spanish and French parts)
On this route you will see all the best in the Basque Country, both in the territory of Spain and France. You will visit Bilbao and its well-known Modern Art Museum of Guggenheim, aristocratic San Sebastian, the record-holder city by number of restaurants rewarded with Michelin stars, Gothic Vitoria, royal Biarritz and of course fishers’ small villages with their unique charm. During the tour you will be accompanied by delightful landscapes of the Green coast of Spain. The route that we developed for you will please you, with abundance of mountain serpentines, cool bends and a lot of bright and unforgettable impressions for the contact with nature, culture, architecture and cuisine of the Basque Country.
1st Day. Transfer and arrival to hotel 3-4 stars in Laredo (Bilbao or Santander), then presentation of documents and route planning. Welcome dinner.
2nd Day. Route of 210 km. In the evening a stop in hotel of 3-4 stars in Laredo.
Today’s route will pass along the Atlantic coast of the Basque Country where we will enjoy cool bends of mountain roads and tremendous landscapes, and also we will visit some small villages in the foothills. Having passed through la Arboleda with its narrow road and delightful views, we will stop for lunch in the main fishing port of Euskadi – Bermeo, where we will taste traditional dishes of the local cuisine prepared from the freshest products. After lunch, we will follow through fascinating bends on the Atlantic coast and dizzy breaks over the ocean. Then w visit several small fishing ports and towns with their monuments of Romance and medieval architecture. On the route there are 7 stops for photos, lunch and visits.
3rd Day. 270 km. In the evening a stop in hotel of 3-4 stars, Vitoria.
This day will start with visiting Loizaga where we’ll see the world biggest private collection of Rolls-Royce cars, further our route will be saturated with fine mountain panoramas, we will visit Balmaseda, Artziniega and Orduña. After lunch we’ll follow to ancient Vitoria, the capital of the Basque Country which was called by Victor Hugo as “the ideal Gothic city”, we will conquer mountain top of Puerto de Herrera, and will visit Amurallada de Laguardia town. Then return to Vitoria, and rest in hotel. On the route there are 4 stops for photos, lunch and visits.
4th Day. 240 km. In the evening we stop in hotel of 3-4 stars in San Sebastian.
The day begins with a small run on the autobahn, and then we are surprised by serpentines of highlands of Urbasa, surrounded by green landscapes of Northern Spain, arrival to Estella. Further the route lies through mountain ridge of Andia, Aralar, Lecumberri where we’ll enjoy the views of authentic Basque small villages like Leitza and Goizueta. As the day ends we´ll visit aristocratic San Sebastian with its Gothic temples, Michelin restaurants and the world best beaches like La Concha! 5th Day. 160 km. In the evening we come back to hotel of San Sebastian.
Today’s excursion will pass through the French part of the Basque Country, where our travel starts from a small excursion on the Europe’s oldest railroad that will take us to the top with the tremendous panorama and 180 degrees views! We´ll have lunch in bourgeois Biarritz, the city where the tradition of bathing in the sea was born at the end of the XVIII century. We will visit romantic San Juan de Luz and boundary small town of Hendaya in the evening, coming back to the Spanish territory where we will visit the mountain of Jaizkibel, and go down to San Sebastian by its serpentine road. On a route there are 4 stops for photos, snacks and lunch.
6th Day. 180 km. In the evening we come back to hotel of San Sebastian.
Today we’ll see the ancient kingdom of Navarra. Today’s route will pass through mountain sites of roads. We’ll visit the cathedral Santuario de Loyola and stop in the small fishing village of Zumaia where you will enjoy tasting the freshest seafood or meat dishes. Then we’ll visit several small fishing towns surrounded with gold beaches like Guetaria, Zarautz, Orio, in the afternoon return to San Sebastian. 7th Day. 250 km. In the evening we stop in hotel of 3-4 stars, Laredo.
Today’s route will pass through the valley of the legendary river of the Basque Country – Deva further on, the picturesque Atlantic coast we will visit the original basque pueblos: Mutriku, Ondarroa and Lekeitio, Santa Catalina’s deacon, and will enjoy views of the ancient port. Further on, we will rise to mountains and arrive on one of the most beautiful tops of the Basque Country of El Monte Oiz which is also called the balcony of the province of Vizcaya ,where to enjoy views of tremendous beauty landscapes. Then we´ll go down to a small village of Durango and again we will begin climbing up to picturesque peak of Urkioladonde well-known monastery. After lunch we will descend from the peak of Dima and go to Bilbao to visit the old part of the city and get acquainted with masterpieces of modern architecture and art. Afterwards we’ll have a chance to visit the ambitious Museum of Modern Art of Guggenheim. And then come back to Laredo– the final stop of our route, the city well-known 6-km sandy beach.
